Kenny is the grounding force of the group. He’s compassionate, loyal, and often puts others’ needs above his own, making him the Earth Element.
Kenny McCormick: The True Heart of South Park and Embodiment of Earth
"Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength." - Dalai Lama
South Park, with its blend of irreverence and sharp social commentary, often uses its characters in ways that go beyond mere comedy.
Kenny McCormick, is frequently seen as just another comedic device—famous for his recurring deaths and muffled voice. Kenny McCormick embodies the essence of the Earth personality—compassionate, loyal, and deeply connected to those around him. These two episodes that highlight Kenny's Earth-like attributes, illustrating his profound influence and strong emotional ties with others.
Understanding Earth Personalities
Earth personalities are characterized by their deep connections to home, family, and friends. They excel in making others feel loved and comfortable, thriving on stable relationships and often prioritizing the needs of others over their own. When imbalanced, they can become codependent and overly cautious. Their love for food and communal experiences often sees them at the heart of social gatherings.
Kenny McCormick – Earth Element
In 2007, Season Five was considered "the one where sh** starts getting good". A significant event in season 5 is the episode "Kenny Dies," where the character Kenny experiences a "permanent" death from a terminal disease, deviating from the usual running gag of him dying in nearly every episode.
The creators revealed that they were running out of creative ways to kill Kenny and were losing interest in his character. Season 6 then explores how the other boys deal with Kenny's absence, initially trying to replace him with Butters and then Tweek. However, due to fan demand, Kenny was brought back at the end of Season 6.
Kenny Dies 🎥(Season 5 Episode 13):
In this emotionally charged episode, Kenny faces a terminal illness, marking a rare serious turn for the show. Despite his usual role as the comedic character who dies in various episodes, here Kenny's condition evokes a deep response from his friends and the community, showcasing his strong relationships. His friends' efforts to save him, especially Cartman's advocacy for stem cell research, reflect the depth of their bonds and Kenny's subtle impact on those around him.
This episode highlights Kenny's ability to nurture deep connections and influence others profoundly, hallmarks of the Earth personality. It showcases how he grounds the group emotionally, highlighting his compassion.
Mysterion Rises 🎥(Season 14 Episode 12):
Kenny, under his alter-ego Mysterion, demonstrates his protective and caring nature, especially towards his sister and the town of South Park. His commitment to uncovering the mysteries of the Cult of Cthulhu and protecting his community showcases his dedication to causes bigger than himself, devoid of any desire for personal gain.
This episode reveals Kenny's deep sense of duty and protective nature, aligning perfectly with the Earth personality's traits of caring deeply for others and fostering safety and comfort. Although more action-oriented in tone, this episode touches on the recurring, resilient nature of Kenny’s character and his ever-present, steady influence within the group.

Kenny Was the Best Character
Across these episodes, Kenny McCormick consistently exhibits the traits of an Earth personality through his deep relationships, commitment to causes, and protective nature. His actions resonate with strength and compassion, reinforcing the idea that true strength lies not in power or visibility but in the quiet depth of one’s character and the relationships one nurtures. Kenny, often underestimated, proves to be a central, stabilizing, and enriching presence in South Park, embodying the essence of the Earth element in every aspect.
It might seem odd to take South Park episodes and fish out The Five Element characteristics. But each character has components of all the elements like we all do.
South Park 's recurring characters allows us to look at the series for its infamous portrayal of profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a large range of subject matters and current events.
We are living in a world of characters that's looking a lot like South Park in 2025, either in the news or in real life.
The "Serenity Prayer" states "Wisdom to know the difference."
I used to say to my son, "There are good cartoons and bad cartoons and to know the difference you sometimes have to watch them all."
We watched a lot of good ones and the bad ones.
In the 90's this cartoon was considered "bad". It was always current, and has stayed current for 26 years. An entire generation learned something from these perpetual 3rd/4th graders. We can most likely continue to learn from them.
So these two episodes our supposed to be displaying earth characteristics, it might be difficult to see that considering Kenny doesn't really talk in most if not all episodes.
What's interesting about "Kenny Dies" episode is the effect it had on the other characters (Stan, Cartman, Kyle ) recognizing the loss of his presence. His mere being was very Earth. No other character was made to died in almost every episode all the way through to season five.
Kenny returned in season six around episode 17, I think. There was this altar ego Kenny created called Mysterion, which I would consider a little bit Earth Element and a little bit Wood Element.
If you're looking to learn the elements by watching South Park, you could read the references below about the other characters and their elemental leanings.
Once all the South Park main characters are described with the elements here in these blogs, I'm going to grow them up and see how their elements evolve.
